The main indoor air pollutants

Benzene is an organic compound belonging to the family of monocyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. It is most often found in the form of a colorless, volatile, highly flammable and carcinogenic liquid. Benzene is present in plastics, solvents, perfumes and many other products. For example, studies point to certain candles for their high benzene emissions.

Formaldehyde (from the family of aldehydes) is an organic compound. For indoor air, it is found in glues and furniture. This is why, since January 1, 2012, construction and decoration products have been provided with an "Indoor air emissions" label.

Carbon dioxide (CO2) is an inorganic compound, usually in the form of a gas. For indoor air quality, CO2 emissions come from human bio-effluents, and vary according to the activity of the room and its occupants. CO2 is an indicator of containment as well as the efficiency of ventilation.

Fine particles are solid particles present in the atmosphere. Mostly classified as human carcinogens (class 1) according to the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), fine particles are generated by human activities such as heating (wood), burning fossil fuels from vehicles, or many industrial processes. The main particle sizes are expressed in PM (PM10, PM2.5 and PM1). The smaller the particle size, the more dangerous it is to health.
